Ignorant question:
If "grab an anonymous token from reg desk / help desk" is acceptable for
Beijing (is it?), why not use it exclusively (and not use the badge info 
at all). Email adresses have perceived value, and not using/collecting them 
(and sending them in cleartext on a non-protected wifi network)
would simply prevent the privary issues people might have and hence reduce
resistance to the whole auth thing.

fwiw: unless the expo foyer gets rented out (unlikely, and not the case
when I was there last week) we have the MECC facility for ourselves, 
exclusively.
That's doesn't diminish the value of the experience of the admission
control, it's just that nothing fails (badly) if it falls through.
