linux boxes seem to also encounter the issue, there's probably a rather greater diversity associated with them than with macs so a lack of universality is probably more in evidence.

the problem if debugging on the machine is frankly nothing happens on the machine, other than the reachability problem becomes apparent. my .1x association did not go away, if it had another available ap would have been selected.
